More than just hardware, the right equipment can alleviate isolation
and open the door for persons with disabilities to greater mobility,
independence and inclusion in family, church and community.
- A wheelchair
or walker makes it possible for a person to leave their house
more freely to attend an event, socialize and become involved
in their community.
- A bath bench
allows a person to take a real shower without fear of falling
in the tub instead of a sponge bath in bed.
We provide used,
cleaned and refurbished durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs,
walkers, commodes, bath benches, etc.) free of charge to persons
who need it, but cannot afford to buy it. Donations
are accepted which help defray costs and allow Bridge to reach more
people in need.
When you come
to visit, donate or pick up an item, expect to be greeted with compassion
and hospitality by one of many of our friendly regularly scheduled,
dedicated volunteers. These volunteers
work alongside just one part time employee to produce over 140 items
per month for distribution. The people served, whether donating
or receiving items are almost always facing grief and or daily challenges
in caring for a person with a disability or the loss of a loved
one after long term care.
We know too
that 20% of our population is living with a disability with 40%
assumed to be living below the poverty level. Providing equipment
at no cost to those who can not afford it is a valuable resource
within our community and the need will increase as the population
of the area served is expected to grow 15% over the next five years.
Donating
to Bridge - Bridge Disability Ministries takes in a wide variety
of used durable medical equipment. For types of items needed or
to schedule a drop off, please call 425.885.1008 or email equipment@bridgemin.org.
We also accept cash, checks and on-line donations to help cover
operating costs. While using mostly volunteer
labor to wash, repair, and ready items for use, it costs an average
of $70 to give away a single wheelchair. Prices of new equipment
can range into the thousands of dollars. We operate the only large-scale
mobility equipment exchange in the Puget Sound area and in 2007,
connected with over 1,000 persons who received needed mobility items.
Your time and gifts, whether in kind or financial are sincerely
appreciated in our mission.
Be sure to visit
our volunteer
site to consider the opportunities available to give back to the
community, make new friends, and to make a difference in someone’s
life including your own!
Obtaining
Equipment from Bridge - All of the items we give away have
been donated to us by caring and generous individuals and families.
We clean and sanitize each piece, and then inspect and repair as
necessary to make it functional and safe to use. We strive to fit
each recipient with the right piece of equipment to meet their physical
conditions and capabilities. Contact us by phone at 425.885.1008
or email equipment@bridgemin.org
for more information on requesting items.
